This handmade wooden spatula for stirring, mixing, and turning is carved from sugar maple. I carved this one by feel, so the handle fits the hand perfectly, which doesn’t show up in the photos, but you will know once you pick it up. I like the way the rounded handle fits into the palm, and the smooth notch at the bottom fits your index finger. I also like that the sugar maple is practically indestructible. It will darken to a deep honey colored patina. Size: 12 inches long by 2 1/4 inches wide. Finished with beeswax and mineral oil. comes with detailed care instructions, and you will receive the exact one shown.

Recipe: Pickled Red Onions. These are addictive, and they go well with everything. Try them on a hot dog or on a pulled pork sandwich. Get a 1-quart container. I use a ball 32 oz. sealed container with a gasket and lever catch. Get one large red onion and cut it into very thin slices lengthwise. The thinner the better. Stuff them into the container as tightly as you can. Put them in a pan with some whole peppercorns and whole cumin seeds. For the broth, add 3/4 cup white vinegar, 3/4 cup water, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon sea salt, and a little white wine. Simmer for 20 minutes and pour back into the container. Let it cool before sealing. After it cools to room temperature, seal and place it in the refrigerator. By the next day, they will turn a bright purple color. They’ll keep for up to two weeks, but they won’t last that long. You’ll have eaten them all in less than a week. Great with barbecue or mix some with green and red cabbage, sliced thin, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, celery seeds, black pepper, and honey for a wonderful cold slaw.
